When I was a boy, I remember my father, Edward Crommelin, mentioning an old friend that he had in Holland named 'Miek' Spoor. The name didn't mean much to me until I recently looked at the back of a beautiful painting that my parents had in our home from before our emigration to Canada in 1952. The painting is a very good copy of the flag-bearer in the 'St. George Civic Guard', a famous group portrait by Frans Hals. On the back of this painting are the words, "Boudewyn van Ossenberg...painted by C. Spoor."

This copy, therefore, is a fine example of the work of Dutch artist, Cornelis Spoor (1867-1928), the father of Michiel Spoor who was my father's boyhood friend. I remember my Dad saying that the artist had copied this painting from the original while sitting in the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. No doubt Cornelis Spoor was a friend of my grandfather, Marinus Crommelin, who had acquired the copy. The painting was in our family a long time because a photo taken in my grandfather's house at 'Willemshoeve' in Bloemendaal shows it hanging next to the staircase.

An interesting thing about Cornelis Spoor is that there is a family connection because he was married to Emilia Catharina van Wickevoort Crommelin whose portrait he painted a number of times. He also painted his son, Michiel Spoor. There aren't many websites on the internet with information about the artist, but I did find a few that provide a little background...
