Three pages from Alfred Daullé's book

This chapter addresses Pierre Samuel, Jacques Samuel and his son, Isaac Mathieu "Le dernier de sa race en France".

What is interesting is that Pierre Samuel, contrary to what seems to be indicated in other family records, had accepted catholicism, most likely because it was the only way for him to become échevin (schepen or sheriff) in Saint Quentin.

His son, Jacques Samuel apparently married a catholic girl, Marie Marthe Couilette, but remained a Protestant himself throughout his life, or so it appears from Alfred Daullé's account. As a consequence, Jacques Samuel was not allowed to be buried at a cemetery but, like many Huguenots, he was buried in the garden of his country house at Remaucourt.
