Glimpse Inside Her Residence

May Crommelin (1849-1930) wrote over 50 novels and magazine short stories during her career as a novelist. Today her novels are considered culturally important because they graphically portray the social mores of a bygone age replete with:

  • relatively primitive transportation and technology [candlelight, lanterns, wood stoves, hacks and cabriolets (taxis), telegraph, steam locomotives, sail and steamships, horse and buggies]
  • limited occupational roles and opportunities for women
  • 'class conciousness' between the frivolous wealthy gentry in the upper class, and the relative obscurity, dreariness and poverty of the 'lower class'
  • chivalry, politeness and 'duty' to look after the needs of one's own family, even at the expense of pursuing one's own personal ambitions
  • appreciation of ancestry and genealogy, and the need to preserve one's estates and assets for the sake of the family and succeeding generations
  • history unfolding as much by human initiative as by God's providence.

The Victorian era in which May Crommelin writes had its quaintness, pastoral beauty, and slower pace of life but the usual rivalry between jealous suitors, and the battle between good and evil were obviously as vibrant then as it is today.

A recurring dilemma in her stories is the restoration of ancestral property to the rightful descendents after it had been lost through carelessness or hardship by one's forefathers.

I find the opportunity to present text files in audio format to be a marvelous way for people to 'read' a book quickly even though they may be visually impaired or feeling somewhat lonely and isolated, perhaps due to limited mobility or Covid restrictions.

I am also pleased to have many interesting books by May Crommelin with which to experiment and hone my skills in this amazing technology. In so doing, I hope you enjoy the quaint Victorian novels of our kinsman, May Crommelin!
