The Carved Tree
Time, it seems, heals all things but heartaches. Once I carved upon a tree;
The name of someone very dear to me;
As though it were partaking in my woe,
A few drops, like tears, from the bark did flow.Over the years when I traversed that ground,
The letters grew larger and wider, I found;
So standing 'neat that tree today
I see where Love's sharp dart
Had in early youth left a mark
That's never gone away.My heartache grows, I can plainly see
But by how much daily is imperceptible to me.
