The Good Thief
The shackles of love are easily worn. I found my love asleeping amongst the flowers spry,
And while gazing on her coral lips, her cheeks, and closed eye:
She lay there so inviting, an impulse came over me,
A small thing, perhaps - yes, a knavish bit of thievery:
As she lay there dreaming, t'was a kiss I stole from her
I felt she had it coming, 'cause she had stolen a heart from me.Like as the silly mouse, the bit of bacon to obtain,
And catching it, is caught himself, and thereby put to pain,
Even so, my love, by this strange theft, while sleeping at her ease
She did capture me, the thief, as I nibbled on her cheese;
Happily both victim and robber are now often enriched anew
By innocent thefts like this, and the bait I love to chew!To be trapped by the one you love
is no cause for alarm.
