Pan Discovers Fire

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

When Pan first saw fire (which before he never did see),
"My, what a splendid thing is that!' said he,
In haste he straightway embraced the flame
And for all his excitement was rewarded with pain.

So in future when you perceive love's alluring charms
Like tongues of fire extending appealing arms,
Be not quick to embrace it, or to a hasty committment turn,
For the one who slurps his soup too quickly,
Will cause his mouth, his tongue, and throat to burn.

Marry in haste, repent at leisure.
