The Wishful Thinker

As with an Echo, to receive a reply
you must say something first.

You who say you want a wife;
Yes, you wish to have a home
But how can you get married,
On wishful thoughts alone?

This simple lesson now I'll teach you,
One that's very true indeed,
To help you find a sweetheart true,
And the home and wife you need:

He who fails to verbalize
What's uppermost in his head
Will likely never realize
His desire to be wed.

Now think ye that of their own accord
A maiden fair might follow
Some man before he's said a single word?
Fie no! Your reasoning is quite hollow.

Those who hear dame Echo's noises,
Know first they have to raise their voices;
For those who silently stare and stand
Can expect in return no answer grand.

And so it is with fair maidens too:
Unsent for, they do will not come,
Nor unasked will they ever follow you.
