A biographical study of Marie Crommelin (1639-1681) has been added. Marie lived in the time of Louis XIV when a sordid scandal called the 'Affair of the Poisons' rocked Parisien society. The scandal touched close to home with the involvement of her second husband, Pierre Cadelan.

The book by J.H. Scheffer has been added. This was the original genealogical resource compiled from data provided by Jacob Crommelin in 1712, and then later expanded by J.H. Scheffer to include information up to the year 1878 when the book was published.

A section has been added reviewing the biographies of the 'Dixie Demons' - the five brothers from Alabama who sacrificed much for their country during WWII while fighting with the Navy.
An article on ‘Bueries’ (Bleacheries) - the first ‘factories’ in St. Quentin has been added.
A new article showing the location in Le Havre, France, where the Oursel/Crommelin family lived in the late 1600's. This is where all the many letters from Catherine Crommelin to her son, Frederic de Coninck, would have been written.

An old Hebrew Psalter published in 1637 and once owned by Pierre Crommelin gives us reason to think about the history of the small Swiss branch of the Crommelin family.
The church registers of the Temple of Quevilly which served the Protestants of Rouen, France, before the revocation of the Edict of Nantes contain records of the births, marriages and deaths of many Crommelin relations connected with the letters of Frederic de Coninck and his mother, Catherine Crommelin, in the mid-1600's.
Old maps of Rouen, France, reveal where the old Huguenot cemetery was located and where several Crommelin family members (children of Jean Crommelin and Rachel Tacquelet) were likely buried.
A collection of pictures taken by Marinus Crommelin in 1898 shows the newly crowned Queen Wilhelmina, age 18, making her first official visit to Amsterdam.

Family members who are interested in the French origins of our family will be pleased to find a transcript of letters from Frederic de Coninck [son of Catherine Crommelin and a nephew of Daniel Crommelin] dating back to the late 1600's. These letters deal with the life and times of our ancestor, Daniel Crommelin, around the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685; Daniel's residence at Greenway Court, Kent, England in the 1680's; his departure for Jamaica in 1693; and his eventual migration to New York in 1694. These letters also mention the Testarts and van Wickevoorts so they help bring many of our early ancestors to 'life'. This translation project is still in progress. It covers the years 1676 - 1730.

A more comprehensive account of the brig Maria tragedy in Australia has been posted. This voyage in 1872 ended in tragedy but one of the fortunate survivors was George Whiting Crommelin (1845-1905). This story should appeal to younger family members who have a taste for adventure and excitement.

A glimpse of family history going back more than three centuries has been added. This article is about Daniel Crommelin (son of Jean Crommelin and Rachel Tacquelet) and his involvement with 2 orphans of the de Coninck family who were related to him by the marriage of his sister Catherine Crommelin to Francois de Coninck. The de Coninck’s were an important textile trading house with whom the Crommelins had extensive commercial and family ties. During a visit to the SHPF (Societe d’Histoire de Protestantisme Français in Paris) Maryse Trannois found extensive correspondence between our two families. She has provided invaluable help in transcribing some of these letters to facilitate translation into English. This collection of correspondence provides interesting reading.

A letter from Frederic de Coninck's 'Letter Book' written to Daniel Crommelin has been translated. It carries a glimpse of Daniel's precarious financial position around 1716. Daniel was living in New York at the time, while Frederic, his nephew, was living in Schiedam, Holland.

The preface to Isaac Mathieu Crommelin's book, Mes Radotages (My Ramblings) or, "the Art of Killing Time", published in 1809 when he was 78 years old, has been translated.
Another book, Partners Three by May Crommelin, pubished in 1903, was recently acquired by Govert Deketh for the Crommelin Foundation archives - a project undertaken together with Miff Crommelin a few years ago. An inventory of the books collection will in coming months be made and published on our website and/or Crommelin Journal.

The house in Amsterdam that Claude August Crommelin occupied at the end of his short life (1840-1874), a 17th century house on the Herengracht (#132), was destroyed by fire on new year's eve 2007/08. Claude August Crommelin was a jurist (from Utrecht university 1865), a member of Council in Amsterdam 1868-1874, a member of Provincial States of North Holland 1868-1874, and a collector of paintings (mostly aquarelles).

Visiting the old, old, old homestead...
Paul and Mary Ann Crommelin of Pennsylvania, descendants of Daniel Crommelin, visited Chester recently. Daniel Crommelin once owned a 3,066-acre homestead called Grey Court, which encompassed parts of Chester, Goshen and Blooming Grove in New York State. The original house that Daniel lived in still stands! Read about Paul and Mary Ann's recent visit.

Another discovery pertaining to Daniel Crommelin turned up recently. Dating back to 1720, an indenture (deed/mortgage) written on a sheepskin was discovered in the attic of a lawyer's offices. This document effectively transferred ownership of Daniel's 'Greycourt' property to various creditors to help satisfy debts incurred by his son, Charles.

Two other Petitions signed by Daniel Crommelin in the 1700's have been discovered. One deals with the "French Scare" that caused trouble for the Huguenots in New York at a time when Britain (which governed New York) and France were at war. Another petition deals with the rash dismissal of the pastor of the French Reformed Church.

The house in Amsterdam that Claude August Crommelin occupied at the end of his short life (1840-1874), a 17th century house on the Herengracht (#132), was destroyed by fire on new year's eve 2007/08. Claude August Crommelin was a jurist (from Utrecht university 1865), a member of Council in Amsterdam 1868-1874, a member of Provincial States of North Holland 1868-1874, and a collector of paintings (mostly aquarelles).

Visiting the old, old, old homestead...
Paul and Mary Ann Crommelin of Pennsylvania, descendants of Daniel Crommelin, visited Chester recently. Daniel Crommelin once owned a 3,066-acre homestead called Grey Court, which encompassed parts of Chester, Goshen and Blooming Grove in New York State. The original house that Daniel lived in still stands! Read about Paul and Mary Ann's recent visit.

Another discovery pertaining to Daniel Crommelin turned up recently. Dating back to 1720, an indenture (deed/mortgage) written on a sheepskin was discovered in the attic of a lawyer's offices. This document effectively transferred ownership of Daniel's 'Greycourt' property to various creditors to help satisfy debts incurred by his son, Charles.

Two other Petitions signed by Daniel Crommelin in the 1700's have been discovered. One deals with the "French Scare" that caused trouble for the Huguenots in New York at a time when Britain (which governed New York) and France were at war. Another petition deals with the rash dismissal of the pastor of the French Reformed Church.
